Collaborative Badlands USR

A university social responsibility project by National Cheng Kung University focusing on the disadvantaged rural communities in the southwestern Taiwan’s badlands region. It integrates teaching, research, and service from the university and works with community and cross-sector stakeholders to promote regional resilience and revitalization through asset-based community development and collaborative planning. The site presents project concepts, inputs, outcomes, and collaboration networks, and serves as a knowledge platform for co-learning and co-creation for the participants of interest.

Badlands Thorny Bamboo Podcast

A podcast by NCKU’s Collaborative Badlands project, sharing stories and field experiences from southwestern Taiwan’s badlands. The origin was to reduce the constant interruptions of students from different courses to reduce the burden of the communities. it later became a stage to showcase the voices of community leaders and the guides for different subjects in badlands. It features voices from communities, students, and researchers, and explores rural regeneration, cultural routes, and collaborative practice.

Collaborative Badlands Interdisciplinary Database

A Community GIS initiative, collaborated by NCKU and Academia Sinica (the top research institutions in Taiwan) for building a database for research, teaching, and service in badlands regions, linking interdisciplinary stakeholders and supporting local knowledge integration. It serves the purpose of digitizing and storing the archives related to badlands and the course outcomes, so that students and community members can utilize the existing resources to leverage extra value.

Collaborative Badlands Blog

The blog is a collaborative work of students and project assistants who document courses, projects, and fieldwork in Badlands to form a collaborative perspective, while sharing resources and insights on rural development and urban–rural relations. It also serves as a database and archive for university-community partnership activities.

This is the official video channel of Collaborative Badland, featuring project promotional videos, course outcomes, and research presentations.

John Thomson and James L. Maxwell Heritage Trail Platform
This platform, developed by the Collaborative Badlands team at NCKU, supports both internal teaching and research and external engagement related to a heritage trail featured by 19th-century British travel photographer John Thomson and missionary physician James L. Maxwell. It provides background information and resource connections for those interested in participating in the preservation and revitalization of this linear cultural heritage.

MTMS (Matsu Military Story Database)
A GIS-based platform for documenting and promoting Matsu’s military heritage through local participation and interdisciplinary collaboration. It geocoded the local stories and literature and helped researchers to find the relevant information by place.
